Course description
This qualification is for those at work that require an understanding of the hazards associated with manual handling and how these can best be avoided. The programme is typically delivered over a half-day and with no practical assessment provides just the knowledge element. This may be more suited to those with existing injuries or those that cannot undertake practical tasks.
Assessment Criterion
Understand the reasons for safer manual handling, in relation to:
Potential injuries and ill health associated with incorrect manual handing
Employers and employee’s responsibilities relating to manual handling at work
The consequences for non-compliance with health and safety requirements at work
Understand how manual handling risk assessments contribute to improving health and safety, in relation to:
Defining the terms ‘hazard’ and ‘risk’ in the context of manual handling work
The steps related to undertaking a manual handling risk assessment
Appropriate risk controls for common manual handling hazards
Understand the principles, types of equipment and testing requirements associated with manual handling safety, in relation to:
Safe movement principles associated with manual handling
Appropriate equipment to be used for manual handling tasks
The requirements for the testing, servicing and examination of manual handling and lifting equipment
